Sketches
In this piece, I set out to capture the essence of my classmate by depicting his interests and aura. Throughout the semester, I came to understand his strong connection to the outdoors, particularly his love for the beach. His presence carries the calmness often associated with coastal life, which immediately inspired my artistic approach. His personal style and the way he carries himself resemble that of a surfer, relaxed, confident, and grounded. I wanted my work to reflect these in a way that felt authentic. Color played a central role in conveying this connection. I chose to work primarily with shades of blue, as the color evokes the ocean and embodies tranquility. Blue also functions symbolically, it mirrors his calm personality while also suggesting movement and fluidity, much like waves in constant motion. Through the layering and blending of tones, I aimed to create a sense of softness. My intention was not only to create a likeness of his appearance but also to represent his connection to nature, specifically the beach. The composition seeks to immerse the viewer in an atmosphere that feels peaceful yet alive, a reflection of how he carries himself in everyday life. The use of color and form encourages viewers to experience the same sense of serenity that the ocean and he embodies. Ultimately, this portrait is a study in personality and place. It explores how an individual’s environment and lifestyle can shape their presence and identity. By emphasizing the connection between person and nature, I aimed to create more than a representation of my classmate, I wanted to express the feelings of calmness, and tranquility you feel around him.
